In painting, a capriccio (plural: capricci) means an architectural fantasy, placing together buildings, archaeological ruins and other architectural elements in fictional and often fantastical combinations, and may include figures. It falls under the more general term of landscape painting. The term is also used for other artworks with an element of fantasy.
In May2015 I stayed in our friends' apartment on the small Greek Island of Antiparos. Next to Antiparos is an even smaller island called Despotiko. We asked a local sea captain to take us across the water so we could explore the Temple to Apollo on the island. I stopped to sketch.

Of course, the head of Apollo and his lyre are not actually there on the ancient site! This painting now lives with the owners of the Greek apartment but they haven't yet decided whether it will stay in London or live in Greece.
