Self Portraits
Self Portrait as Pythia

Self Portrait as Rembrandt
Over the years I have occasionally taken some time to make paintings of myself. But this has always been experimental and mainly done for fun. I've never found myself to be such an interesting topic for sketches and paintings preferring landscapes, still life and the other subjects on this website. However, during the suddenly imposed government lock down in the early months of 2020, when I mainly stayed in my house for many weeks, and with the lack of other subject matter, I produced quite a few self portraits. Here are some of them along with some others that I painted before.

Comment:
I had a look at the new page of self portraits. It is engaging. You have put contrasting works after each other so one can see the range of expression that Gareth has. That is both in the medium used and what lies behind it. Some are examinations of what is seen, as the lines and shades search for their exact place. Others allow for an imaginative combination of types and characters that Gareth sees within the self portrait he is engaged on. Others take the mood as more central. The distance between Gareth and the portrait that emerges varies. Very interesting to investigate as an onlooker.
You may have been surprised yourself at the variety when you put it together.
