My Studio

My studio was built in 2004  when we replaced an old shed of similar dimensions. The studio is at the back of a large communal garden in North West London. It is shrouded in trees and shrubs and is backed by a large garden owned by the council. The garden supports a wide range of wildlife including squirrels, toads, newts, frogs, foxes and a wide range of birds visit including Jays, Woodpeckers and Parrots. We have recorded Red Admiral and Meadow Brown butterflies. I even saw a bat one summers evening!

The studio measures 18 feet by 9 feet and extends to 9 foot high at the apex. It was constructed on a 3 to 4 inch concrete base with a 12 inch hardcore layer and DPM sheet. The framing is wooden and the outside is wooden planking. The structure was erected in one day by Chart Stables. I fitted window glass, locks and ceiling insulation. After many years procrastination, I lined the studio with thermal insulation and 8mm plywood, which makes it easier to heat in winter and much cooler in summer. The lighting is provided by daylight bulbs and two roof lights.

I have fitted a purpose built ash wood bench and shelves and have built a table to exact size requirements. I have an "H" base frame tilt able studio easel. There is a purpose built cupboard to house gardening equipment and carpentry tools.

I would recommend building a studio like this to other artists, although I have to say the cost of doing this would be considerably higher if you did not do so much finishing work yourself. It is a wonderful place to retreat to and being in the garden location is perfect for me in so many ways.
